Russ Kurth, a 63-year-old a man has died after he was buried alive by an avalanche of corn.

According to Metro UK, Russ Kurth was found outside of a grain bin on private property in Harrison County, Missouri, on Tuesday.

The man is believed to have died when the huge container suddenly leaked.

He was buried so deep that emergency services were unable to pull his body from the corn until one hour after the incident.

Another person, who was not been identified, was buried alongside Kurth but made it out.

The incident is still under investigation.

Kurth was active in the Harrison County community, and was elected to the Board of Supervisors in 2014, reports The Daily Nonpareil.

He worked as an area resource conservationist after graduating from Iowa State University in 1977 with an animal science degree.

In a 2010 interview about farming of the future, he said: ‘When I started in 1986, we had the 1985 farm bill that required farmers to have conservation compliance plans on all their highly erodible land. And then we had to help them apply the conservation practices and plans by 1995.

‘There’s lots of good, conservation-minded farmers in the county. I’ve enjoyed helping them protect and improve their land.’

Grain container deaths are not uncommon and some parts of America practice Grain Safety Week.

There are 10,000 commercial grain sites in the US and 300,000 storage units on farms.
