A football fan pictured apparently swapping numbers with a Brazilian woman at the World Cup has denied he was chatting her up.
Carl Wenz, who was watching England’s opening match with Italy on Saturday, was caught by television cameras holding a mobile phone and speaking to a female Brazilian.
Mr Wenz, who has four children with long-term girlfriend Nicola Moore, can be seen in an England shirt next to a woman in a blue and yellow vest with ‘Brasil’ on the front.
The image has been shared over 2,000 times on Twitter, with users commenting ‘hope his wife’s not watching’ and ‘better player than Gerrard’.
The butcher, from Harlow, Essex, told his local paper that he enjoys chatting to locals in the countries he visits while following the England team.
‘The girl in the photo asked if she could have a picture taken with me, of which I said yes, her brother took the photo and I am seen looking at it on her phone,’ Mr Wenz told the Harlow Star.
Jonathan Grieg, a close friend of the England fan who works for ITN, said it was something that would ‘only happen to him.’
‘He’s an old-fashioned person,’ he said.
‘He’s in a long-term relationship and would consider the interest generated by the picture hilarious.’
