Suspected killers of a Divisional Police Officer (DPO), attached to the Agugu Police Division in Oyo State, Ikeokwu Nwogu, have been arrested and paraded by the state Police Commissioner, Muhammad Katsina.
The late DPO was murdered on April 1, 2015, at the Adekile area of Ibadan, during a reign of anarchy that reared its head in the aftermath of the alleged discovery of a kidnappers’ den in the area, a claim the police said was false.
The CP said Nwogu was hacked down with machetes in the melee while his service pistol was taken away by the hoodlums.
Katsina said he personally led the ambush squad that investigated the killing in the area, which led to the arrest of 49 suspects, with some arrested in Lagos and Abeokuta, Ogun State, where they had sought refuge after the crime.
"On April 1, 2015, there was a distress call received by late Nwogu that a mob had laid siege to the Adekile area of Orita-Aperin over a false alarm that a house in the area was being used for ritual purpose.
The DPO responded promptly and moved to the scene with his men. On arrival at the scene, he addressed the mob who attempted to set the building ablaze.
A thorough search was conducted by the DPO and some members of the public, but the allegation was not confirmed.
However, some criminal elements in the process attacked the DPO and inflicted machete cuts on him and also shot him. They also made away with his service pistol.
49 of the callous murderers and arsonists have been arrested. The machetes, guns, charms used in committing the crime have been recovered. We also recovered property looted at the scene."
