A 21-year-old Hope Fountain axe-wielding miner allegedly pounced on a 57-year-old woman and raped her in front of her grandson before demanding to know her name, a court has heard.
Njabulo Dhlamini went on to threaten the old woman and promised to be back at the same time next day for another round before disappearing into thin air.
Dhlamini appeared before Bulawayo Magistrate Sibongile Msipa facing rape charges and was remanded in custody April, 2.
Prosecuting Caroline Matanga told the court that on March, 10 at 12 midnight, Dhlamini pounced on the woman who was asleep next to her grandson. The woman had closed her door and was awakened by a man who was holding a torch and an axe.
She tried screaming for help but Dhlamini grabbed her by the throat and choked her, awakening her grandson.
The boy started crying but Dhlamini silenced him and undressed the woman before raping her once without her consent and without protection.
Afterwards he threatened the boy not to tell anyone and promised the woman to be back for another round at the same time the next day.
Dhlamini asked for the woman’s surname and fled the scene. The woman made a report to police the following morning leading to Dhlamini’s arrest.
