Talented West Ham youngster Dylan Tombides has died at the age of 20 after losing his battle with testicular cancer.
The Australian-born striker was diagnosed with the disease shortly after being promoted to the Hammers first-team squad in 2011, but still made his debut a year later in the Capital One Cup.
He continued to train with the squad in between treatment and had told friends on Facebook in 2012 that he was hopeful of beating cancer.
However, it was reported shortly after that he suffered a setback and West Ham confirmed on their website that he passed away this morning.
Dylan’s brother, Taylor Tombides, who also plays for West Ham, paid tribute to his brother and team-mate on Twitter.
West Ham left their own tribute to the player in a short statement. It read: ‘Dylan was respected by everyone who knew him for his intelligent views on the game and his larger than life character.
‘He was a loving son, amazing brother and well-respected member of the West Ham squad. He will be hugely missed by everyone who had the honour of knowing him.’
The Hammers will mark Tombides’ death with a minute’s applause before Saturday’s Premier League clash with Crystal Palace at Upton Park.
