It's now illegal to spank your child in South Africa


Sonke Gender Justice has welcomed a court ruling that makes it illegal to spank your own child in South Africa. 

The South Gauteng High Court on Thursday ruled that the common law defence of reasonable chastisement is not in line with the Constitution and no longer applies in our law.
The judgment arises from an appeal by a father who had been found guilty of assault because he beat his 13-year-old son in a manner that exceeded the bounds of reasonable chastisement.

Nigeria generates N246.30 billion VAT between April, June 2017 – NBS


The National Bureau of Statistics, NBS, says that N246.30 billion was generated as Value Added Tax, VAT, in the second quarter of the year.

The bureau gave the figure in its `Sectoral Distribution of Value Added Tax’’ for the Second Quarter released on Friday in Abuja.

Daniel Olukoya, the General Overseer of Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries (MFM) falsely affirmed himself to be a legal resident of the State of Maryland in the United States for business purposes, official court documents show. 

Olukoya made the false claim in the Articles of Incorporation of the church in Baltimore in 2002.  In the Articles of Incorporation filed with the State of Maryland Department of Assessment and Taxation, Olukoya claimed to be a Resident Agent for Service for MFM Baltimore, and personally signed the Articles in that capacity.
