At least 25 dead in migrant shipwreck off Libya – charities


At least 25 people are feared to have drowned in a shipwreck off Libya after a dinghy, possibly carrying some 150 migrants, ran into trouble, two rescue organisations said Saturday.

“Rubber dinghy sunk north of Tripoli. At least 25 people died in the incident, exact numbers still unclear. Italian navy on the scene,” the German charity Sea Watch said on Twitter.

Sharia Court Judge Abducted In Niger


There was pandemonium in Jermiya village in Rafi Local Government Area of Niger State on Thursday evening as gunmen invaded the village and kidnapped a Sharia court judge, Abubakar Jibrin.

It was learnt on Friday that the judge was returning from work when he was accosted by the kidnappers at around 6:05 pm.

EFCC detains UBEC contractor over alleged N20bn scam


The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has detained a contractor with the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), Prof. Adesanya Adelekan, in connection with alleged N20billion textbooks and science equipment fraud.
The commission has also restricted the movement of a former Executive Secretary of the UBEC, Mr.Suleiman Dikko, to the country, pending the conclusion of the ongoing probe.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has dismissed allegations linking him as the chief financier of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN).

The Federal Government would prosecute any marketer that sells petrol above the recommended N145per litre, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, has warned.

Speaking yesterday during a meeting of the committee set up by government to resolve grey areas in the supply of petrol, Kachikwu denied saying that marketers could be allowed to sell petrol above the prevailing N145 per litre.He said: “We are actually looking at those who have breached this process to see what we can do to penalise them and set stiff penalties for those who sell above N145 per litre.

There was drama at Uradi Primary School in Kisumu West, Kenya, during a meeting to discuss the management of the institution when parents attacked the head teacher over poor Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examination results.

Thousands of Benue indigenes have fled the state and taken refuge in communities in Nasarawa State as a result of the New Year’s Day killings in state.
