Police Shoot Residents In Ibeju-Lekki Land Grab

Police Shoot Residents In Ibeju-Lekki Land Grab
The controversial land grab by the Lagos State Government taking place in Ibeju-Lekki had its latest victim today.
Mr. Abacha Awosanya lost a finger when police arrived in Idotun Community and start shooting at residents.

In recent weeks, people in neighboring towns have experienced invasions by mobile policemen; one source told SaharaReporters a person died as a result.
The Lagos State Government is trying to forcefully take over land in Ibeju-Lekki area for the Free Zone project.
Residents have been resisting efforts unless they are properly compensated or give a new place to live.
In early February, SaharaReporters broke a story that the Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola had invited billionaire businessman, Aliko Dangote to the area as a possible site to build his petrochemical plant and refinery.
Local chiefs from the area, however, exposed the event as window dressing, saying the Government had paid chiefs and rented crowds to impress Mr. Dangote to show local resident were in favor of the project.
A local landlord told SaharaReporters they are not opposed to development in the area but they were not consulted, nor were the told of any plan or compensation or resettlement.
