Manchester United’s summer move for Thomas Vermaelen could be set to fall through with Arsenal demanding double the value of their first offer.
United are believed to have bid £6m for the Belgian international, but the Gunners are holding out for £12m for a player who spent best part of last season on the bench and who has just one year remaining on his contract.
Vermaelen last week denied reports of a switch to Old Trafford, but the rumours have resurfaced, with interest also said to be coming in from Italian side Napoli.
The centre-back has been at Arsenal since 2009, signing for £10m from Ajax.
But he fell out of favour with boss Arsene Wenger last term, making just 21 appearances in all competitions as Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker became the Frenchman’s favoured centre-back pairing.
The 28-year-old also suffered a succession of injuries last season and was forced out of Belgium’s World Cup match with Russia on Sunday with a knee problem.
