Manchester United were interested in signing Wilfred Ndidi before he agreed terms with Premier League champions Leicester City in the January transfer window.
The Foxes were one of the first teams in England to express interest in signing Ndidi from Racing Genk, having scouted him eighteen months ago, and they would have missed out on his signature if they had waited until the summer.
“Our recruitment department take a real pat on the back for that. We did a lot of homework on him and I think we were one of the first clubs, if not the first, to show an interest in him,” Foxes manager Shakespeare said.
“I think he, and his family and agent, remembered that so we were in the driving seat. When other clubs came in for him he remembered the way we went about it first. He had other options.
“From what you’re seeing so far, we’ve got a good player on our hands.”
The 20-year-old Ndidi has been dubbed the new Patrick Vieira after delivering some commanding performances in midfield for Leicester City.
