After two scoreless draws with Mali and Guinea, Nigeria rose to the occasion to beat the Black Stars Monday night to finish runners-up in Group A on five points.
On Thursday, Nigeria will battle the winners of Group B, which will be determined tonight with all four teams – Niger, Senegal, Cote d’Ivoire and Benin – still in contention for a place in the last-four.
“Qualification for the semi-finals of the WAFU Cup is great for the team, great for the country,” applauded Salisu.
“The players showed character and showed that given the opportunity they can play at this level.
“We are focused on the semi-finals. We don’t know who we will play until after the end of Group B.
“We thank Nigerians for supporting and praying for us.
“It’s an honour to be given an opportunity to serve our fatherland.”
The coach said the team for next year’s CHAN in Kenya is taking shape going by their outing at the WAFU Cup.
“I believe we are having the team for the CHAN, it’s the same team who qualified the country for CHAN with a few additions for the WAFU Cup who have added quality,” he said.
“We will continue to work hard and see where we can add some other players.”
