The body of a man identified as Ismaila Abiodun, was on Monday found inside a petrol tanker with Lagos number plate XL 45 JJJ, belonging to a filling station in Amuloko area, Akanran road in the Ona-Ara council area of Ibadan.
Abiodun, a member of Odua Peoples’ Congress and a guard at the station, was last seen on Sunday when he told his colleague, Kabiru, that he was going to change after closing from work. He however did not return as expected, leading to confusion over his whereabouts. Opposite the station is a piece of land where petrol tankers belonging to another filling station are packed. Abiodun was said to have headed towards the direction.
Eyewitnesses said Ismaila must have died while attempting to siphon fuel from the tanker.
“After the other colleague waited for a reasonable time to see Ismaila return, but did not, he had to inform the other colleague manning the complex that they should look for him in the park. They searched and called his mobile number but there was no answer,” said one of the witnesses who identified himself as Sheriff.
“Eventually, in the early morning, we learnt that somebody saw that one of the lids of the tanker compartments was open and they decided to climb and find out who could have opened it. To their surprise, Ismaila’s dead body was found in it,” he added.
Policemen from Akanran and Fire fighters later arrived at the scene to recover Ismaila’s body. His body was deposited at the Adeoyo State Hospital mortuary while Kabiru was whisked away by the police for interrogation.
