The whiskey was put through specialist lab tests after experts raised doubts about its authenticity. The Dunfermline-based Rare Whisky 101 was discovered to be was a modern blend, probably distilled no earlier than 1970.
The drink would have had a bar value of about £227,000, had it been genuine, according to reports.
But it proved to be a “virtually worthless” as a collector’s item.
Hotel manager Sandro Bernasconi has flown to Asia in the past week to give Wei his money back.
