A police source at the division said one person was arrested in connection with the phone which was recovered about 14 weeks after it was reported stolen at the division.
The source was of the belief that the person in India unknowingly bought the phone valued at about N200,000 from a shop at GSM Village, Wuse.
City News learnt that the phone when reported stolen by a woman, was tracked through the IMEI number.
The Gwarinpa Divisional Police Officer, CSP Nuruddeen Sabo said the phone was recovered with the cooperation and support of the parents of the man in India.
“When we tracked the phone, we got the forensic printout of the tracking and arrested one of the soft targets that the person using the phone constantly called. The soft target took us to the house of the person using the phone,” he said.
He said the parents of the man said the suspect was in India and prevailed on him to return the phone, “The parents told us that he is studying in India when we approached them. We called the boy through the number provided by the parents and he confirmed that he is using the phone in India and that somebody called Chinedu sold the phone to him before he left Nigeria.”
He said the phone was received from India through a courier service and the man described the shop and person that sold the phone to him in Abuja.
“We went and arrested one Chinedu from the shop in Wuse and the suspect said it was his boss that put the phone in the shop. The boss has died,” he said.
The DPO said that investigation was ongoing.
