There was a mild drama at the 14th Annual Chief Gani Fawenhimi Lecture in Ikeja, Lagos on Monday, as some youths booed Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN), who was one of the discussants.
The youths blocked the path of Ozekhome, who arrived the venue of the lecture at the Airport Hotel, Ikeja, at about 1.30pm, insisting that the SAN would not be allowed into the lecture hall.
Ozekhome’s arrival was greeted with a loud chant of disapproval by the youths, who disrupted the lecture which was already underway.
It took the intervention of the Chairman of the Ikeja branch of the Nigerian Bar Association, Mr. Adesina Ogunlana; and that of Mr. Richard Akinola, to shield Ozekhome from the irate youths.
They accused the SAN of “shielding looters from justice.”
Mr. Femi Falana (SAN), who was also at the event, had to also leave the high table where he sat among others to placate the youths and calm them down.
At the time of filing this report, Ozekhome has been led to the high table, sitting among other discussants, including musician, Seun Kuti; Fawehinmi’s son, Mohammed; and publisher of Sahara Reporters, Omoyele Sowore.
The irate youths have also substantially calmed down, but few angry voices could still be heard.
