Ogun government probes killings by herdsmen

The Ogun State Government says it has commenced investigations into the alleged killings of people and attacks on schools in Ketu Local Council Development Area of the state.

Secretary to the State Government, Taiwo Adeoluwa disclosed this to newsmen when asked the state government’s reaction to the spate of killings by herdsmen in some parts of the state.

Adeoluwa frowned at  media report which alleged that 30 schools had been shut down following the alleged killings and destruction of farms by herdsmen.

He said: “Government is taking note and this is because of the kind of government we are running. The issue was mentioned at the state exco (Monday) and we are investigating the report. Be assured that government is looking into the cases of herdsmen.

“In Ogun State, we have always lived together. We put calls to our people and sent a delegation immediately to the area. We have set up a committee that attends to farmers/herdsmen issues since 2011. We have sent a standing committee to the place to verify the report and also taken steps on it.”

Meanwhile, the Ogun Police Command has denied reports of that 30 communities were invaded by herdsmen but  confirmed that there were farmers/herdsmen problems in the area.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Abimbola Oyeyem in a  statement, said “The attention of Ogun State Police Command has been drawn to  a newspaper  report of an alleged attack on some communities in Ketu Local Council Development Area of Ogun State were the report claimed that about 30 schools were sacked.

“In as much as the Command is not joining issue with the people of the said community, the public needs  to know the true situation of things along that axis.  To start with, there was no report of any herdsmen attack in any community around that area in recent time talkless of sacking of 30 schools.

"Representatives of Ketu communities recently held meeting with the Commissioner of Police in his office where sundry issues relating to security of their areas was extensively discussed and they were assured of the Command readiness to protect their life and property at all time, while all schools are currently on sesson.”
