Nwakanma Chukwudi, a 30-year-old Nigerian Internet fraudster popularly called 'Yahoo-Yahoo', has been dragged to before Justice D. V. Agishir of the Federal High Court sitting in Enugu, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), for allegedly conning the sum of $26,000, (N421m), from a Canadian Internet lover.
Chukwudi who was arrainged by the anti-graft agency on March 23, 2015, on a 12-count charge bordering on cyber-crime, obtaining money by false pretence and impersonation.
The case against Chukwudi is that he claimed to be a British citizen, named Barry Bernard, and met the Canadian lady named Donnalynn, on a dating site.
In the course of their online dating, he was able to convince the lady to send him money nd overtime, milked her of $26,520.
EFCC Head of Media and Publicity, Wilson Uwujaren, said that in the course of the accused and complainant’s romantic affair, Chukwudi, who also claimed to be resident in Manchester, United Kingdom, sent several love mails and pictures to Donnalynn.
"Donnalynn did not have any course to doubt him when he requested for $26,520 (Canadian dollars) from her, having been communicating with him over a period of time.
When she later found out that she had been duped, she petitioned the EFCC."
Through a meticulous investigation, Chukwudi was arrested and charged to court.
The suspect pleaded not guilty when the charges were read to him and Justice Agishir adjourned the matter till April 7 for consideration of the bail application and ordered the accused to be remanded in prison custody.
