The 275mph One:1 was being tested at the notorious Nurburgring circuit in Germany ahead of an attempt at the lap record when the accident happened.
The driver lost control after exiting the notorious ‘Fuchsröhre’, which is of the track’s most demanding sections, and couldn’t brake enough before entering ‘Adenauer Forst’.
As a result, the Koenigsegg smashed into a barrier and ended up on the other side of the rail with serious front and rear damage.
Huge tyre marks along the asphalt show how far the unnamed test driver skidded before hitting the barriers.
The car also appears to have suffered fire damage as a result of the high speed crash, which happened on Monday.
In a statement, Koenigsegg confirmed the driver was taken to hospital as a precaution and released the same afternoon.
The firm added: ‘A Koenigsegg is an extreme performance car and must be tested accordingly.
‘This is an inherently dangerous undertaking that must be conducted progressively and methodically, working point by point on all areas of our highly adjustable vehicles.
‘Our primary concern is always driver safety and any testing is structured and conducted accordingly.
‘This incident is confirmation of just how difficult it is to drive at this level on the world’s ultimate proving ground.
‘Obviously we are dismayed with this development but pleased that our safety systems worked as designed to protect our driver.’
Koenigsegg has only built seven One:1 models and it is believed to be the world’s fastest production car.
It is powered by a 5-litre engine which develops a staggering 1,341bhp to give it a 0-62mph time of less than three seconds.
The car will do 0-248mph (400kph) in around 20 seconds and the brake to a standstill in ten seconds.
When it went on sale it had an asking price of more than £2 million but Surrey-based Koenigsegg specialist Supervettura is currently marketing the One:1 development car for around £5 million.
The current lap record for a production car at the 12.8 mile long Nurburgring is six minutes 57 seconds, set by the Porsche 918 Spyder.
