Dutch midfielder Wesley Sneijder has been handed a massive fine of £1.96m by Galatasaray for picking up 11 yellow cards this season. That’s £178,00 per card.
This is a club that had Brazilian hot-head Felipe Melo in their ranks for four seasons – In two of which he surpassed Sneijder’s 11 card haul.
“I am really sorry for what has happened,” Sneijder told NTV. “It’s not possible to say at the moment what is going to happen. We will wait and see what the coming days will bring. I do not give too much importance to the fine.”
Fine unsurprisingly causes controversy
The huge fine appears to be a ploy to force club legend Wesley Sneijder out of the club but Galatasaray’s actions have led to furious protests from fans.
The controversy has sparked protests by angry fans outside the club’s headquarters in the Florya district of Istanbul against club chairman Dursun Ozbek.
Sneijder tweeted his support to the Galatasaray fans yesterday: “Galatasaray fans, thank you for your support on this day. I am grateful… I love you!”
