A father in Niger State forgave a 62-year-old man who raped his three years old daughter after the rapist promised to treat the girl.
The culprit, Mohammed Sani, a resident of Cool-Cat area in Maitumbi of Bosso Local Government Area, was, however, arrested after the girl’s brother-in-law insisted the matter be reported at the state’s police command.
The Police Public Relation Officers, Mr Bala Elkana, said on Tuesday in Minna, that Sani committed the offence on March 4, and was arrested on March 8.The culprit, Mohammed Sani, a resident of Cool-Cat area in Maitumbi of Bosso Local Government Area, was, however, arrested after the girl’s brother-in-law insisted the matter be reported at the state’s police command.
“The suspect, while in police custody, admitted guilt and has been charged to court,” he said.
The suspect was a neighbour of the victim.
Narrating the incident, a source said,
“The little girl goes to his house to play with his granddaughter, but no one realised that she had been raped until she complained of severe pains in her private part. When we examined her, we realised that she had been violated.
“When we asked her if someone touched her private part, she told us that Baba Sani touched her.
“When we confronted him, he initially denied, but later owned up to the offence and begged for forgiveness.
“The father forgave him because he promised to treat the girl, but a brother-in-law insisted that the matter must be reported to the police.”
Reacting to the incident, Hajia Maryam Kolo, Director-General of the Niger Child Rights Protection Agency, described it as “real wickedness”.“This is an act wickedness; it is a violation of the Child Rights Act,” she said.
She said that the agency would file charges against the victim’s father for negligence.
Kolo advised parents to ensure proper monitoring of their children and the peer groups they associated with.
