Senior Special Assistant to President Buhari on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, yesterday berated a columnist with The Sun newspaper, Amazi Obi, who in his article referred to President Buhari as a murderer over the killings in Benue state. Shehu while speaking to state house correspondents in Abuja, called on the media to be responsible in its reportage of events happening in the country. He particularly stressed on the need to avoid hate speeches as it does not serve any purpose in uniting the nation.
''It is regretful that in some of our news rooms, responsibility and self regulation has taken a flight. It is sad to note that some segments of our mass communication system in the country is everyday sinking deeper and deeper into hate speech. I will sight two examples. From the Sun newspaper where Femi Adesina comes from and I am sure it will be embarassing for him as well. We don't know which school of journalism teaches this kind of headline, that there is a red alert in Benue, expect more bloodshed.
So what is this supposed to serve? If you have read the back page of the same sun newspaper yesterday, there is a column writer named Amanzi Obi who wrote to say of the Minister of Defence that he is a Fulani Irredentist and he literally called President Buhari a murderer. Where is defency, ethic, where is responsibility. Where is respect for the office of the president of Nigeria. This writer says President Buhari was the first to endorse the Benue massacre'' he said.
