Arsene Wenger confirmed Alexis Sanchez asked to be taken off but expects him to return for Arsenal‘s next game after appearing to suffer a thigh injury during Saturday’s 4-1 win over Stoke.
The Chile international signaled to the bench shortly before scoring his second goal of the game as the Gunners kept alive their hopes of Champions League qualification.
Arsenal face Sunderland at home in midweek before finishing their Premier League campaign against Everton at the Emirates next Sunday, while the FA Cup final against Chelsea at Wembley takes place on May 27.
The north London club can ill-afford to be without their star forward who now has 10 assists and 21 goals in the Premier League this season, and Wenger hailed the attitude the former Barcelona man.
Wenger said: ‘Yes, he asked to come off. Alexis is special you know not only because of his talent but he always finds the resources.
‘I don’t claim anything I just think he has shown again that it’s not about talent but desire too and fighting spirit and he has that as well.
The physios told me he wanted to come off, I don’t know what it was, but he’s a fighter.’
Asked if he considered Sanchez a doubt for Tuesday’s game against Sunderland, Wenger said: ‘I don’t think so.’
