The largest evacuation in US history is taking place as Irma gathered strength once again to become a Category 5 storm.
It is packing sustained winds of 160mph and a storm surge of up to 12ft is expected.
The death toll currently stands at 27 lives lost after Irma tore through the Caribbean including several British Overseas Territories.
Images of the devastation gave greater urgency to warnings with the National Weather Service stating simply: "This is as real as it gets - nowhere will be safe."
