Caretaker manager David Unsworth was touted as a suitable candidate to take over as Everton boss on a permanent basis following an improved display against Chelsea last week after Ronald Koeman was sacked.
Everton remain in the relegation zone after a 2-0 defeat to Leicester on Sunday, though, but Allardyce – who said he had “no ambition to take another job” in football when he left Crystal Palace after securing their Premier League status – could be persuaded by another battle to avoid relegation.
“I’d have to consider that if that phonecall happens,” Allardyce told BeIN Sports, when asked if he would take the Everton job if offered.
“There’s no point speculating at the moment. David Unsworth is in the chair, Joe [Royle] sat upstairs will have an opinion today [after the Leicester defeat] and from the Chelsea game.
“It’s really going to be tough for Everton to get out of that position. Not because the lads are not trying, but as a team collectively they can’t keep a clean sheet and can’t score a goal. Those are the two problems, if you resolve one, you’ll end up resolving the other and that will start with the clean sheet.”
Allardyce took over Crystal Palace last December with the club just one point above the relegation zone but guided the club to six wins in eight matches to seal a 14th-place finish.
The former Bolton, Newcastle and West Ham boss has now laid out his blueprints to help Everton escape their current position in the bottom three.
“I’ve been in this position a number of times in the last three clubs I’ve had,” said Allardyce. “I’d just put the team back to basics and show them what exactly what it takes to get out of this position.
“Sometimes it’s not entertaining, particularly away from home, but it’s about commitment, getting a result and how do you do it?
“You look at the strengths and weaknesses of the side and promote the strengths, build the confidence, but stick to a basic game where you make fewer mistakes than the opposition, try and get the clean sheet and go from there.”
