Saturday, January 15, 1966 is arguably one of the days to remember in the history of Nigeria. It was the first military coup, and it took place barely six years after Nigeria gained independence from Britain.
Some senior military officers, including the then Chief Instructor at the Nigerian Defence Academy in Kaduna, Major Kaduna Nzeogwu, his co-conspirators, Major Timothy Onwuatuewgu, Major Emmanuel Ifeajuna, Major Adewale Ademoyega and Major Chris Anuforo, among others, made attempts to overthrow the democratic government in place at the time, headed by Nnamdi Azikiwe as the President and Abubakar Balewa as the Prime Minister.

A suicide bomber who blew himself up after being turned away from a music festival in southern Germany was a Syrian man who had been denied asylum.The 27-year-old killed himself and injured 12 others, three of them seriously, when he detonated an explosive device near a bar in central Ansbach on Sunday evening.

A 28-year-old operator of a commercial bus (danfo) in Lagos, Nnamdi Ikunor has been arraigned before the Lagos Magistrates Court sitting in Ikeja for s*xual assault of an eight-year-old girl.
Ikunor is facing a two-count charge of defilement before Magistrate Bola Osunsanmi.

Nigeria’s president, Muhammadu Buhari, said that he was ousted as head of state in 1985 by the then Chief of Army Staff, Maj. Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, because he was fighting corruption.
Buhari, who was the military head of state for 18 months, said this during an exclusive with The Interview Magazine.

RCCG Pastor Abducted During Service


A Pastor attached to the Redeemed Christian Church of God at Santos bus stop in the Isawo, Ikorodu, Lagos State, was on Sunday, July 24, 2016, abducted by some unknown gunmen during service.
The pastor, identified only as Bajomo, was reportedly whisked away by the gunmen, who came to the church as if they were new members.

A Nigerian man who is facing execution in Indonesia within days tearfully told a court that police electrocuted his genitals to force him to confess to possessing heroin.

Michael Titus Igweh, a clothe importer is among several prisoners on death row whom lawyers and human rights groups are frantically lobbying to save from the firing squad amid claims they were tortured and their legal cases riddled with corruption, errors and miscarriages of justice.

Abdulmumin Jibrin, he sacked chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Appropriations, has made a shocking revelation on how N284 billion constituency projects was allegedly smuggled into the 2016 budget. He alleged that 10 standing committees inserted the projects into the budget without the knowledge of their members. Jibrin, who had claimed that he was removed from his position because he blocked some shady moves of some lawmakers, regarding ing the budget.
He accused the Speaker, Yakubu Dogara, of secretly persuading him to insert N20 billion into the budget through Service Wide Vote. In a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday, July 24, Jibrin alleged that the Speaker has been hijack by some cabals.

INEC Threatening Nigeria’s Democracy With Inconclusive Elections – Fayose


Ayodele Fayose, governor of Ekit State, has expressed worry over inability of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to conduct credible and conclusive elections since the advent of the President Muhammadu Buhari led All Progressives Congress, APC, government.
The governor, who reacted to the alleged manipulation of the Imo North Senatorial election, which was declared inconclusive, said “democracy in Nigeria is being threatened by INEC and this should call for national and international reflection.”

Heavy rain kills 87 in China


Heavy rain in China has killed at least 87 people and forced thousands from their homes, state media reported on Saturday.

Seventy-two people have been killed and 78 are missing in the northern province of Hebei after rain triggered floods and landslides, the Xinhua news agency reported, citing the civil affairs department.

Nearly 50,000 homes have collapsed, it said.

A non-governmental organization based in Osogbo, Osun State, the Justice Now Foundation, JNF, has called for the arrest and investigation of the operatives of a two-man civil society organisation code-named Civil Societies Coalition for the Emancipation of Osun State (CSCEOS).

JNF in a terse statement issued in Osogbo on Saturday by its chairman, Mr. Lanre Afolayanka, the group said has directed its lawyers to write the Nigerian Police and the Department of State Security to immediately arrest and investigate the ring leader of the organisation, one Comrade Adeniyi Alimi Sulaiman who on Wednesday 2oth July, penned a press statement accusing the highest disciplinary organ of the Nigerian Judiciary, the National Judicial Council (NJC) of forgery, financial inducement and outright corruption.

Fayose comes for President Buhari over ‘looted’ billions of dollars recovered


Ayodele Fayose, governor of Ekiti state, has questioned the whereabouts of the “billions of dollars” recovered by the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari from looters.

In a statement released on Sunday, Fayose dismissed repeated claims that massive corruption in the regime of Goodluck Jonathan, former president, is responsible for the poor economic state of the country under Buhari.

“It is only a lazy worker that would complain about his tools,” he said through Idowu Adelusi, his chief press secretary.
