Court grants siblings N200,000 bail for beating up policeman


An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court on Monday granted N200,000 bail each to  two siblings who allegedly beat up a policeman and tore his uniforms.
The Magistrate, Mrs O.A Layinka, also ordered each of the accused – Michael Oladunjoye (28) and Sephia Oladunjoye (26) – to produce two sureties each with evidence of two years tax payment.

Nigerian banks ‘sacked 360 people every week from Jan to June’


Data made available by the National Bureau of Statistics show that 8,663 people lost their jobs in the first half of 2017.
In other words, an average of 360 people have been sacked every week from January to June 2017. The figures were higher in the first quarter and lower in the second.

Woman who live streamed sister's death after car crash defends herself


A woman accused of killing her little sister and injuring another teen girl says she looked "like a monster” in a video she live-streamed of the deadly crash last month.

Obdulia Sanchez was charged with drunken driving and vehicular manslaughter after swerving off a California road, killing her 14-year-old sister Jacqueline Sanchez and injuring Manuela Seja, also 14, while filming the July 21 Instagram video of the tragedy.

The Cross River State Police Command, weekend, smashed a kidnap syndicate that specialises in kidnapping high profile civil servants and other businessmen in the state.

Artificial womb raises hope for premature babies


An artificial womb has been successfully used to incubate healthy baby lambs for a period of one week, and researchers hope the technology will one day be able to do the same for extremely premature babies.

The long-standing collaborative Western Australian-based program, involving researchers from the Women and Infants Research Foundation, the University of Western Australia, and Tohoku University Hospital, Japan, has sought to develop an effective treatment strategy for extremely preterm infants born at the border of viability (22-23 weeks).

Uber driver charged with locking 19-year-old passenger inside car, demanding sex


An Uber driver in Chicago allegedly locked a 19-year old passenger in his car and demanded that she have sex with him, authorities said.

Muhammad Fahim, 44, was ordered held on $100,000 bail Saturday for three counts of unlawful restraint in connection to the July 4 incident, the Chicago Tribune reported.

NATIONAL leadership of Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU,  yesterday, said it was not true that the indefinite strike declared last week had been called off.


There was a report, weekend, that the strike had been suspended after the Federal Government representatives led by Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige, and Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, met with the leadership of the union in Abuja, Wednesday.

External reserve sets to hit 30-month high of $32bn


NIGERIA’s external reserve is set to hit a 30-month high of $32 billion by the end of this month.Data from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) showed that the external reserve rose to $31.55 billion on August 16, from $30.84 billion on July 31, representing increase of $710 million in 16 days. 
This trend is expected to persist in the second half of August driving up the reserve to the $32 billion mark.

The external reserve had been below $32 billion since February 2015, 30 months ago, from where it declined steadily to $23.89 billion on October 19, 2016.

EFCC recovers N329b from 10 marketers


The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has recovered N329.150billion from 10 marketers from 2016 to date.
The marketers defaulted in payment for products supplied to them by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) through its subsidiary, the Petroleum Products and Marketing Company (PPMC).

A court in Guangdong Province, China, has confirmed the death sentence on suspected drug smuggler, Mr. Ikechukwu Peter Obiekezie, with two years probation.
