Victor Valdes to Leave Relegated Middlesbrough


Three-time Champions League-winning goalkeeper Victor Valdes had his contract terminated by mutual consent by Middlesbrough as they cut costs after relegation from the Premier League.
 
The 35-year-old former Spanish international, a member of the Barcelona side that won the 2006, 2008 and 2011 Champions Leagues, played 28 times for Middlesbrough last season before a rib injury curtailed his campaign.

Andrew Yakubu Gets Bail to Travel Abroad for Medical Treatment


The Federal High Court, Abuja, on Wednesday granted Andrew Yakubu, former Group Managing Director (GMD) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) permission to travel abroad for medical treatment.
 
Yakubu was arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on a six-count charge of money laundering and false declaration of asset.

A businessman, 31, Damilare Ketiku, who allegedly stole a Sim card and used it to transfer N714,000 was on Wednesday brought before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos. The accused was docked before a Magistrate, Mrs Y.O Ekogbule, on a charge of stealing.

A Karmo Grade 1 Area Court in Abuja on Wednesday sentenced a 28-year old man, Danladi Garba, to two months in prison for stealing a purse containing N1,180.
The presiding judge, Mr Abubakar Sadiq , passed the sentence when Garba pleaded guilty to a charge of theft.
He also ordered the recovered purse to be returned to the owner.

Nigeria’s indebtedness will climb to 24.1 per cent of its Gross Domestic Product by 2018, the International Monetary Fund has said.

Nigerian Economy Shrinks Again Under President Buhari


The National Bureau of Statistics on Tuesday released the Gross Domestic Product report for the first quarter of this year, which showed that the economy contracted by 0.52 per cent in the period.
 
With the negative growth rate of -0.52 per cent, the Nigerian economy is still in recession. The rate of growth for the first quarter of 2017 is, however, an improvement over the revised -1.73 per cent GDP growth rate as of December 2016.
 
This is the fifth consecutive quarter of contraction that the economy would record since the first quarter of 2016.
