Nigeria meningitis deaths rise to 813 – health minister

More than 800 people have died in a meningitis outbreak in Nigeria but the disease is now spreading more slowly, health minister Isaac Adewole said on Wednesday.

“As of yesterday (Tuesday), the number of deaths stood at 813,” he told reporters in Abuja after a cabinet meeting. “As of now, we are noticing a decline.

Court jails driver seven years for causing passenger’s death over N20

A Katsina State High Court sitting in Malumfashi on Wednesday sentenced a commercial bus driver, Hassan Sanusi, to seven years imprisonment without an option of a fine, for causing the death of a passenger over N20 change disagreement.

Sanusi, 35, of Shuwaki Quarters in Funtua, Katsina State, was convicted after being found guilty of the offence of culpable homicide not punishable with death, according to Section 224 of the Penal Code.

Court orders temporary forfeiture of Patience Jonathan’s $5.8m

A Federal High Court in Lagos on Wednesday ordered a temporal forfeiture of $5.8 million belonging to a former First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, to the Federal Government.

The order followed the ex-parte application by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, seeking the forfeiture of the amount to government, pending the determination of the motion on notice.

A civil servant, Michael Ayinde, on Wednesday pleaded with an Igando Customary Court in Lagos to end his marriage because of his wife’s penchant for making babies.

Mr. Ayinde, 39, told court that his wife, whose name he gave as Glory, enjoyed “giving birth at will’’.

Deji Adeleke, the younger brother to the first civilian Governor of Osun State, Senator Isiaka Adeleke, has said the cause of the senator’s death is yet to be known.

Three suicide bombings rocked the northeast Nigerian city of Maiduguri on Wednesday, killing one civilian militia member and injuring several others, security personnel told AFP.

The bombings came two days after multiple suicide attacks near the strategic city that killed four members of the civilian joint taskforce (JTF) and injured two others.

A suspected pipeline vandal, Fatai Karounwi, has said he makes N50,000 every day in the illegal act, adding that he had vandalised over 40 pipes before he was arrested by the police.

Karounwi, aka Kokoro, who said he had been into the illegal act for the past three years, added that he was introduced to the crime by a friend, Oyebanji Agboola, aka Fish.

Karounwi and Agboola were among 10 suspected militants and vandals paraded by the Zone 2 Police Command, Onikan, Lagos State on Tuesday.

Lagos State Government To Relocate Computer Village To ICT Park, Katangowa

The Lagos State Government has revealed that, efforts are ongoing to relocate traders in Computer Village, Ikeja to Katangwa in Agbado/Oke-Odo and then convert the area into a world-class ICT Park.

An Ile-Ife Magistrates’ Court in Osun on Tuesday remanded a pastor, Onawale Adeniyi, 33, over alleged fraud.

The Prosecutor, Insp. Christian Olajide, told court that the accused committed the offence in 2016 at Asipa in the Ipetumodu Magisterial District in Ile-Ife.

The suspended Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), David Babachir Lawal yesterday appeared before the presidential panel where he was quizzed over alleged violations of due process in the award of contracts under the Presidential Initiative on the North East (PINE).

A suspected robber, Lawrence Nwede, has accused operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, Lagos State Police Command, of releasing a member of his gang, who allegedly procured a gun they used for operations.

Nwede said the gang member, whom he identified only as Uche, was released by SARS a day after he (Uche) was arrested and brought to the command.
