Nigeria to investigate how date fruits from Saudi found way into markets


The Federal Government is to investigate how some of the 200 tonnes of date fruits donated by the Kingdom of Saudi to Nigerian Muslims found their way into the markets.
The Minister of State Foreign Affairs, Khadijat Abba-Ibrahim, in a statement apologised for the “unfortunate turn of events”.

Saraki denies bribing conduct tribunal judge with $2 million


Senate President Bukola Saraki has denied reports that he bribed Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal, CCT, Danladi Umar to the tune of $2 million to obtain victory in his ruling yesterday.

Recall that the Code of Conduct Tribunal sitting in Abuja on Wednesday ruled that Saraki has no case to answer in the 18 charge of non-declaration of assets brought against him by the Federal Government.

The case of certificate forgery against the federal House of Representatives member, Nse Ekpenyong, continued Thursday at the Federal High Court, Uyo, with the arraignment of a man who allegedly wrote WAEC examinations for the lawmaker.

Mr. Ekpenyong is a member of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and represents the Oron Federal Constituency, Akwa Ibom State.

70 Ghanaians Deported From US In Handcuffs


Over 70 Ghanaian immigrants were deported from the United States yesterday for visa-related offences including staying illegally, over staying their permits.

The all-male deportees arrived at Accra’s Kotoka International Airport in handcuffs before they were handed over to local authorities, different Ghanaian websites says.

The United States and British embassies in Nigeria have withdrawn and denied entry visa to some serving and retired Nigerian Army officers, a report of a Board of Inquiry set up by the army to investigate allegations of human rights abuses by the military in the country has revealed.
This is even as the Nigerian Army exonerated itself over allegations in its confrontations and treatment of Boko Haram terrorists and internally displayed persons in its operations in the North-East, as well as members and sympathisers of the Indigenous People of Biafra.

27-Year Old Arrested For Raping Physically Challenged Lady


A 27-year-old man, Michael Ubani, who allegedly raped and stole from a 19-year-old physically challenged girl, was on Thursday remanded in the Kirikiri Prison, Lagos State.

The Magistrate, Mr. M. A. Etti, who gave the ruling at an Apapa Magistrates’ Court, said the accused should remain in custody pending when his bail application would be considered.

The accused, who resides at Olodi Apapa area of Apapa, Lagos, pleaded not guilty to a three-count of rape, assault, and stealing.

7 people killed and 66 injured in an explosion near a kindergarten in China


According to CCTV, at least seven people were killed and 66 were injured, including children, in a blast near a kindergarten in eastern China today.

Two people died at the scene and five died at the hospital while Nine others are in serious condition. No children or teachers are among the dead.

A German court on Wednesday sentenced a bank manager who masterminded an armed robbery in his own branch in Hanover and stole 367,500 Euros ($411,700) to three years and five months in prison.
The 32-year-old was found guilty of planning the robbery with an accomplice, who entered to bank in June 2016 with a gas pistol and a fake hand grenade.

A sex worker, who gave her identity as Hilda Davids, alleged to have taken the nude photographs of her customer, also identified as Ofoegwu, after bouts of sex at a hotel, was on Wednesday arraigned before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos state.

27-year-old Davids, who lives in Ikeja, was arraigned on a two-count charge of intent to extort by blackmail and to steal.
The prostitute, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja, on Wednesday, nullified the decision of the Code of Conduct Tribunal, CCT, which found former Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Elder Godsday Orubebe, guilty of allegation that he falsely declared his assets in 2007.
In a unanimous judgement, a three-man panel of Justices of the appellate court led by Justice Mohammed Abdul Aboki, voided Orubebe’s conviction on the premise that the CCT verdict occasioned a miscarriage of justice against him.
