Parents withdraw their children from school over injection rumours in Damaturu

On Monday, parents withdrew their children from public primary schools in Damaturu, forcing the schools to shut down over rumours of an unusual injection being administered on the children.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that there are rumours in the town that an unnamed non-governmental organisation was injecting pupils in public primary schools in the town.

Thirty-seven people were killed after Kenya’s August elections, and all but two of the cases were caused by “excessive” force by police, a human rights watchdog said on Monday.

Previous tolls from the disputed elections – since annulled by the Supreme Court – had not exceeded 24, and until now there were few details into how the deaths occurred.

In a 262-page report, the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) said 35 of 37 deaths it documented between August 9-15, were due to “excessive use of force by police”.

France will not recognise Catalonia if the Spanish region unilaterally declares independence, its European Affairs Minister, Nathalie Loiseau, said on Monday.

“If there were to be a declaration of independence, it would be unilateral, and it would not be recognised,” Loiseau said on CNews television.

Catalonia, which has its own language and culture and is led by a pro-independence regional government, held a referendum on Oct. 1 over secession in defiance of Spain’s constitutional court, which had declared the vote illegal.

Nigeria Airways retirees okay N45b for pension arrears


Retired workers of the defunct Nigeria Airways have agreed to the N45 billion approved by the Federal Government to settle their pension arrears.The workers, under the aegis of Nigerian Union of Pensioners (NUP), and Aviation Union Grand Alliance (AUGA) disclosed their readiness at the weekend after their meeting.

The Chairman of the Nigeria Airways branch of NUT, Sam Nzene, told The Guardian that the retirees agreed to accept the sum to assist their suffering and sick members.

Massive decrease in air travel as domestic airlines record 3m passengers in 6 months


Domestic airlines in Nigeria lifted a total of 3,287,310 passengers in the first six months of this year, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

The figure, however, represents a 21 per cent decrease, compared to the 4,193,862 passengers airlifted within the period last year.
