Nigeria meningitis deaths rise to 813 – health minister

More than 800 people have died in a meningitis outbreak in Nigeria but the disease is now spreading more slowly, health minister Isaac Adewole said on Wednesday.

“As of yesterday (Tuesday), the number of deaths stood at 813,” he told reporters in Abuja after a cabinet meeting. “As of now, we are noticing a decline.

Court jails driver seven years for causing passenger’s death over N20

A Katsina State High Court sitting in Malumfashi on Wednesday sentenced a commercial bus driver, Hassan Sanusi, to seven years imprisonment without an option of a fine, for causing the death of a passenger over N20 change disagreement.

Sanusi, 35, of Shuwaki Quarters in Funtua, Katsina State, was convicted after being found guilty of the offence of culpable homicide not punishable with death, according to Section 224 of the Penal Code.

A Federal High Court in Lagos on Wednesday ordered a temporal forfeiture of $5.8 million belonging to a former First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, to the Federal Government.

The order followed the ex-parte application by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, seeking the forfeiture of the amount to government, pending the determination of the motion on notice.
