Bayelsa State, was yesterday thrown into mourning following the sudden death of a newly-inducted Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Mr. Francis Egele.

Egele, an illustrious son of the state, who hailed from Okoroba in Ogbia Local Government Area, reportedly breathed his last on Friday morning.

Saudi arrests 11 princes over anti-austerity protest

Saudi authorities have arrested 11 princes who protested against the kingdom’s austerity measures and who could face trial, a news website close to the government reported on Saturday.

Sabq said the princes, who were not named, were protesting at a historical Riyadh royal palace, Qasr al-Hokm, against a government’s decision to stop paying the water and electricity bills of royals.

A Nigerian couple who pleaded guilty to federal charges related to forcing a Nigerian woman to work nearly 20 hours taking care of their home and five children without pay for two years was ordered Friday to pay her more than $121,000 in restitution.

Chudy Nsobundu, 57, and his wife Sandra Nsobundu, 49, also were sentenced by U.S. District Judge Nancy Atlas to seven months in jail and seven months of home confinement, plus three years on probation.

Coutinho set to join Barcelona – report

Barcelona and Liverpool have agreed a deal in principle for Philippe Coutinho to move to the Spanish giants for 120 million euros ($144 million) with add-ons worth another 40 million euros, a report said Saturday.

This comes after the Lagos state Commissioner of Police, personally rescued the 11- year-old maid , Precious Nwafor on Thursday . Her rescue followed complaint of ill treatment by neighbours. 

EFCC detains UBEC contractor over alleged N20bn scam

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has detained a contractor with the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), Prof. Adesanya Adelekan, in connection with alleged N20billion textbooks and science equipment fraud.

The commission has also restricted the movement of a former Executive Secretary of the UBEC, Mr.Suleiman Dikko, to the country, pending the conclusion of the ongoing probe.

Atiku denies being chief financier of cattle breeders

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has dismissed allegations linking him as the chief financier of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN).

A statement in Abuja by his media aide, Paul Ibe, said: “It is very disheartening that in this period of intense grief in Benue State, Chief Paul Unongo would choose to level these sad and false allegations on the person of Atiku, who he erroneously described as the chief financier of MMACBAN.

Government to prosecute marketers selling petrol above N145

The Federal Government would prosecute any marketer that sells petrol above the recommended N145per litre, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, has warned.

Speaking yesterday during a meeting of the committee set up by government to resolve grey areas in the supply of petrol, Kachikwu denied saying that marketers could be allowed to sell petrol above the prevailing N145 per litre.He said: “We are actually looking at those who have breached this process to see what we can do to penalise them and set stiff penalties for those who sell above N145 per litre.

A 45-year-old man, John Ulaha has confessed to impregnating his mother-in-law, Mrs Ashetu Igbasue, 42.

The incident occurred in Awe local government area of Nasarawa state.

Mr Ulaha, a farmer and carpenter, is a native of Keana LGA who lives in the state capital Laifa, where he carries out his carpentry business.

There was drama at Uradi Primary School in Kisumu West, Kenya, during a meeting to discuss the management of the institution when parents attacked the head teacher over poor Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examination results.

According to SDE, Yonah Oyugi found himself in hot soup when parents demanded an explanation on the poor results recorded by the school. They attacked him with chairs and stones, leaving him with multiple injuries.

Thousands of Benue indigenes have fled the state and taken refuge in communities in Nasarawa State as a result of the New Year’s Day killings in state.

According to Channelstv.com, Thirty-three persons including women and children were allegedly killed by suspected herdsmen in Guma and Logo local government areas of the state on the first day of the year, causing outrage and a protest in the state capital, Makurdi.
