NATO to announce measures over UK poisoning

NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg will on Tuesday unveil “measures” in response to the poisoning of a former Russian spy in Britain, the alliance said, as international pressure mounts on Moscow.

NATO has warned that the nerve agent attack on Sergei Skripal and his daughter must have “consequences” and Stoltenberg will hold a news conference in Brussels at 3:30 pm (1330 GMT) to make an announcement on “further decisions”, the alliance said in a brief statement.

31-year-old Nigerian man arrested for drug peddling in India

Calangute Police in North Goa, India have arrested one Nigerian National for allegedly drugs worth Rs 1.5 lakh. According to Calangute Police Station In-charge Police Inspector Jiva Dalvi, information was received about a Nigerian National coming to deliver a consignment of drugs at Porbowado, Calangute, Bardez-Goa.

Immediately a team was formed to conduct a raid and Mr Dalvi along with the team left to trace the accused person in private vehicles.

Spy attack: We can’t find Russian spies to expel, New Zealand says

New Zealand said Tuesday it would like to expel Russian spies in retaliation for allegedly poisoning an ex-agent in Britain — only it can’t find any Moscow operatives in the remote South Pacific nation.

Scores of Russian diplomats have been ordered from the United States, Canada, Australia and various European countries in the wake of the nerve agent attack on Sergei Skripal and his daughter in Salisbury.

Nigeria’s poorest, richest, indebted states

The report of the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) on 36 states’ Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) has unmasked the financial strength of states, putting them in three categories – richest, middle class and poorest.

The report, released at the weekend, in addition to grading the states in terms of IGR, unearthed the level of debt stock of each of them and their collection from federation account in 2017. The Bureau put states’ total IGR in 2017 at N931.23 billion, a figure higher by over N100 billion compared to 2016 figure of N831.19 billion. The IGR of Lagos, Rivers, Ogun, Delta and Kano states is two-thirds of the total internal revenue generated by all the states in 2017.

Ex-Brazilian President Lula loses appeals, may be jailed

An appeal court in Brazil has unanimously rejected the final procedural objections by former President Luiz Inancio Lula da Silva against his corruption conviction.

The decision, handed down on Monday, raises the possibility that the former, leftist president could face prison time.

“I don’t respect the decision because if I respected the decision of a liar, my granddaughter, when she grows up, would feel ashamed that her grandfather was a coward,” he said, during a Facebook broadcast of an event held after the court’s ruling.

Greece to get €5.7 billion in bailout cash

Eurozone authorities will make a fresh 5.7 billion euro cash injection to Greece on Wednesday, putting Athens further down the road to leaving its painful bailout programme later this year.

The new tranche agreed by the EU’s bailout fund on Tuesday is the latest from Greece’s third financial rescue package since 2010, when its debt crisis brought the European single currency close to collapse.

A 36-year-old woman, Ngwu Nkeiru, who allegedly poured hot water on her housekeeper and burnt her hands and legs with hot pressing iron, was yesterday arraigned before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court.

The defendant, who resides at No. 47a, Ogundana St., off Allen Ikeja, Lagos, is facing a two-count charge of assault and assault occasioning harm.

Fake Emir of Kano gets 36-months jail term

A Kano Senior Magistrates’ Court on Monday sentenced a 20-year-old student, Sultan Bello to 36 months imprisonment for impersonating the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the convict who resides at Ja’oji New Court Road Quarters, Kano, is being tried on a three-count charge of impersonation, cheating and defamation of character.

Grace Mugabe is being investigated for allegedly smuggling ivory worth millions to underground foreign markets

Investigators from the parks and wildlife authority have handed documents to police showing that the former Zimbabwean first lady, Grace Mugabe spirited large consignments of ivory to China, the United Arab Emirates and the United States among other destinations,  Sunday Mail reports.

Police spokeswoman Charity Charamba confirmed receiving a report but declined to elaborate when questioned by AFP.
