DSS Arrests Major Financier Of Kogi Kidnap Gang

The Department of State Services (DSS) said it had arrested Lawal Mohammed, a suspected major financier and armourer of the dreaded Basalube kidnap gang in Kogi.

A statement issued by an operative of the service, Mr Tony Opuiyo, today in Abuja, said the suspect was arrested on March 23, at Japama in Obajana Local Government Area of Kogi.

Man strangles wife to death, dumps body in lagoon

A carpenter , Nnana Ononaku , was on Monday brought before an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos , for allegedly strangling his wife to death and throwing her body into the lagoon.

The accused , 45, resident of number 89, Oke Eri Street , Oworonshoki, Lagos , was charged with murder.

Nigeria’s poorest, richest, indebted states

The report of the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) on 36 states’ Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) has unmasked the financial strength of states, putting them in three categories – richest, middle class and poorest.

The report, released at the weekend, in addition to grading the states in terms of IGR, unearthed the level of debt stock of each of them and their collection from federation account in 2017. The Bureau put states’ total IGR in 2017 at N931.23 billion, a figure higher by over N100 billion compared to 2016 figure of N831.19 billion. The IGR of Lagos, Rivers, Ogun, Delta and Kano states is two-thirds of the total internal revenue generated by all the states in 2017.

Ex-Brazilian President Lula loses appeals, may be jailed

An appeal court in Brazil has unanimously rejected the final procedural objections by former President Luiz Inancio Lula da Silva against his corruption conviction.

The decision, handed down on Monday, raises the possibility that the former, leftist president could face prison time.

“I don’t respect the decision because if I respected the decision of a liar, my granddaughter, when she grows up, would feel ashamed that her grandfather was a coward,” he said, during a Facebook broadcast of an event held after the court’s ruling.

Fake Emir of Kano gets 36-months jail term

A Kano Senior Magistrates’ Court on Monday sentenced a 20-year-old student, Sultan Bello to 36 months imprisonment for impersonating the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the convict who resides at Ja’oji New Court Road Quarters, Kano, is being tried on a three-count charge of impersonation, cheating and defamation of character.
