No fewer than four persons were killed in clashes between rival cult groups in Ijebu Ode, Ijebu Ode local government area of Ogun State Tuesday night, with the gangsters seizing the mayhem to loot shops within the town.
It was gathered that two persons were killed on Olisa Street, while one person was killed on Ejinrin Road and another around Degun area, all in the township.
Sources learnt that the new violence was triggered by the Eiye cult group, out to avenge the killing of two of their members over the weekend, by Aiye group.
On Wednesday afternoon, the feuding cult gangs engaged themselves in a shoot at sight at Joke street, beside Ijebu Ode Grammar School, off Abeokuta Road.
Residents and shop owners ran helter skelter for safety as the boys later looted some shops around the area.
Cult wars had abated in the town with the coming of the Ibikunle Amosun administration.
Residents now feared that the new clashes may be signs of revival of the war.
“You need to see how these boys were shooting this afternoon. Infact, you need to see the kind of guns they are using,I think these boys must be checkmated or else,we will back to square one in this town. This governor is doing fine in terms of security, but I sense a foul play somewhere. God knows best,” said a concerned resident of the town.
“My concern now is the innocent old women who are now being attacked and their shops looted by these cult guys. Many shops were looted in my area and I was told by my girlfriend that they came to their area too at Apebi street and looted some shops and even attacked some people and collected some money from them. My brother, why all these, in a civilised town like Ijebu Ode? This calls for government urgent attention”,another resident said.
A police source from Igbeba Area Command in Ijebu Ode confirmed the killings and said that the police are battle ready for them.
