Former Aston Villa and Middlesbrough defender Ugo Ehiogu has died at the age of 44 after collapsing at Tottenham’s training centre on Thursday.
The ex-England international, who was coaching Spurs’ Under-23 side, was given medical treatment on site at the training ground before being taken to hospital by ambulance.
‘It is with immense sadness that we announce the passing Ugo Ehiogu, our U23 coach,’ Spurs announced in an official statement on Friday morning.
‘Ugo received immediate treatment after suffering a cardiac arrest at the training centre yesterday before being transferred to hospital, where he passed away in the early hours of this morning.’
Ehiogu is remembered for making over 200 appearances at Villa before spending seven seasons at the Riverside Stadium with Boro.
The centre-back also turned out for West Brom, Leeds United, Rangers and Sheffield United over the course of an esteemed career.
Tottenham’s head of coaching and development John McDermot said: ‘Words cannot express the shock and sadness that we all feel at the club.
‘Ugo’s immense presence will be irreplaceable.’
Aston Villa, with whom Ehiogu won the League Cup back in 1996, confirmed a minute’s silence would be held ahead of this weekend’s Midlands derby with Birmingham in honour of their former star.
