ESPN is being called out for photoshopping Tiger Woods' mugshot for a story it ran on the golf great's Monday [May 29] arrest.
The original image taken of Woods at Palm Beach County Jail places him against a green background. The photo presents Woods as disheveled, with droopy eyes and a shaggy head of hair. The shot aired by ESPN shows his face to be exactly as it was in the original, however, his hair appears much more kept; as though it had been sprayed and slicked to the side.
The edited version of Woods' mugshot was first reported by Golfweek writer Geoff Shackelford, who stitched it to the original and published a side-by-side comparison for readers to examine. Many have speculated as to whether the network fixed Woods up purposefully, in a move that might win them his favor, while others suspect that the change was the result of poor cropping. ESPN has issued a statement in which it explains the later to be the case.
“We have utilized a standard template for on-air headshots, which led to the background being dropped for consistency," ESPN stated via Philly.com. "We will revisit this process to improve it going forward.”
