Nigerian-born French citizen, Calvin Hemery, on Saturday in Abuja beat Diaz Figueroa of Guatemala 6-7, 6-3, 6-1 to win the GSL Tennis Open.
Hemery, who was the tournament’s number one seed, had a very tough time in beating Figueroa, who displayed superb smashes in the first set which he won 6-7.
The Nigerian-French player however dominated the Guatemalan in both the second and third sets to coast home to victory.
Both players had met in the Dayak Tennis Open which saw Hemery stunning Figueroa 7-6, 6-7, 6-2.
In his remarks, Hemery, who dedicated his victory to God, said it was a fruit of ceaseless hard work.
Also speaking, the immediate-past President of Nigeria Tennis Federation (NTF), Sani Ndanusa, thanked the sponsors of the tournament for making Nigeria proud.
Ndanusa, who described the tournament a ‘’huge success’’, said it was an advantage to Nigeria.
He said that the tournament’s success was as a result of a Public Private Partnership (PPP) aimed at promoting tennis in Nigeria.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the tournsment, an ITF Men’s Circuit event, is an opportunity for Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) points for players.
