Massive amounts of ‘fake Viagra’ are being sold at a market in London (Photos)

Massive amounts of fake Viagra are apparently being sold at a Sunday market in south-west London. A worried member of the public took images of the drugs, which treat erectile dysfunction, after he stumbled across them at Nine Elms Market, in Battersea.

‘I was quite shocked walking around, there was Viagra, vodka and perfume but you have no idea what’s in it, it’s quite worrying,’ he said. ‘Someone could buy that perfume and it could cause harm to someone’s skin, but if it was something taken orally like the medication it could have catastrophic events.’

The Sunday market has approximately 400 stalls and operates near the New Covent Garden Market – the UKs biggest wholesale fruit, vegetable, and flower market. The man added: ‘It’s obviously coming in from somewhere and it makes you wonder why someone from the council hasn’t gone down there and paid more attention – they should definitely be doing more about it. ‘Online, you have to provide your ID, vehicle registration and liability insurance, but if that was the case, how could you get to do this?’ There has been a joint effort to get rid of counterfeit items in the past when Wandsworth Council’s Trading Standards Team, Covent Garden Market Authority and Saunders Markets combined in 2011 to form a voluntary charter.

But that move doesn’t seem to have worked and the unnamed man added a person he met at ‘Nine Elms Market’ had referred to it as the ‘fake market’. He also said he was concerned about where the proceeds from the sales of the items were going. He said: ‘I normally walk past, smirk and shrug my shoulders, but you think about it and ask yourself who’s controlling it?’
