After 13 trophy laden years at Manchester United, Rooney returned to Goodison Park in the summer, and has become an integral part of the Blues first team.
The 32-year-old boyhood Blue is this season’s top scorer and is set to be recalled to the starting line-up for Saturday’s Premier League clash at home to Goodison by manager Sam Allardyce.
Rooney, though, has already set sights on the next stage of his career.
Speaking to ex-Liverpool defender and fellow Scouser Jamie Carragher in the Telegraph, Rooney has underlined his ultimate aim.
“The main thing I want to have a go at is management,” said Rooney.
“I would love to stay at Everton in a coaching role or hopefully manager one day. It is something I want to do – to stay involved, but if that is not possible I will look to see where the opportunities are for me. I am determined to become a manager.
“From next season I want to be doing some coaching sessions with the under-14s at Everton.
“It would be good to have all my badges by the time I have finished, but it is also about having the chance to carry on when I have so I can get straight into coaching.”
Asked by Carragher if there was a chance he could one day be “boxing” with Steven Gerrard – who has already taken his first steps towards management at Liverpool – on the touchline in a derby, Rooney added: “Ha ha. I hope so.
“Obviously my first objective is to do well as a player over the next few years.
“Then I hope the role can grow into something beyond that. It is something I will talk about with the club when they and I feel the time is right.”
For now, though, Rooney is busy ticking off his to-do list before hanging up his boots.
