A Florida man charged with killing his 88-year-old mother claims that the elderly woman asked him to kill her. Richard Guyton Mathews, 62, was in a “highly intoxicated” state when allegedly confessed to a mortician while discussing funeral arrangements, WFTV reports.
Flagler County sheriff’s deputies arrested Matthews Wednesday evening. According to reports, Matthews said that he attempted to strangle his mother to death and eventually gave her an overdose of sleeping pills.
His mother, Mary Ann Shaw Mathews, was found dead Feb. 21 inside her home. “Deputies and paramedics responded to the home shortly before 7 p.m. on that evening where they found the elderly woman deceased, seated in a chair in the living room,” sheriff’s office spokesman Commander Bob Weber wrote, according to the Daytona Beach News-Journal.
“There were no signs of apparent trauma to the body.” The medical examiner noted high levels of medication and evidence of strangulation, according to the Florida Times Union. Matthews is charged with manslaughter.
