Court Dissolves 30-Year-Old Marriage After Husband Beats Wife To Coma

An Abeokuta Customary Court on Monday dissolved the 30-year-old marriage between Lateef Salawu, 53, and the wife, Baliatu, over frequent beating.

The court’s president, Mr Olalekan Akande, observed that all efforts to reconcile the couple proved abortive and consequently dissolved the marriage.
Akande said both parties were free to marry anybody of their choice, adding that the children are old enough to determine where and who to live with.
He ordered that the schooling, welfare, health and other matters would be a joint responsibility of both parties.
It will be recalled that after hearing from both parties on March 24 Akande adjourned the case untill April 7 for judgment.
Baliatu, 45, had sought for divorce over frequent beating and lack of care and desertion.
The mother of five said the husband was fond of beating her whenever they quarrelled, adding that he once beat her to a state of comma.
“I have been patient enough, I cannot cope with the beating anymore; Since I packed out of his house he has not been responsible for the welfare of the children,” she said.
Salawu admitted that he used to beat his wife because she “is too stubborn, disrespectful and provocative’’.
