Body Of Ebola Victim Cremated In Lagos To Avoid Outbreak

The body of the first victim of Ebola Virus Disease in Nigeria, who died in Lagos on Friday, has been cremated. Details of the cremation were not available at press time but Sunday Vanguard gathered that the event was witnessed by officials of the Lagos State Ministry of Health and the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, led by its Project Director, Professor Abdulsalam Nasidi, among others.
The decision to cremate the body of the victim, it was further gathered, may not be unconnected with the deadly nature of the Ebola Virus which is known to be easily transmissible from human to human during handling of corpses of victims.
The World Health Organisation recommends that in communities where there is an outbreak of Ebola, appropriate containment measures including burial of the dead should be properly handled.
While stating that people who die from Ebola should be promptly and safely buried, WHO notes that cremation, which is the application of high temperature to reduce bodies to basic chemical components (ashes), is ideal for safe disposal of bodies of persons who die during outbreaks of highly infectious diseases such as Ebola Virus in order to minimise further transmission.
In 2013 the Lagos State Government introduced its Voluntary Cremation Law under which a person may signify interest to be cremated at death or a deceased’s family members who must attain the age of 18 years, can decide to have the corpse cremated.
Under the law, the state government can also cremate unclaimed corpses in its mortuaries after a period of time and the ashes disposed after a 14-day notice with approval of the Commissioner for Health.

But how did it all go so wrong?

Ritualists beheaded a lady in Ondo

Some suspected ritualists yesterday morning beheaded a yet to be identified middle aged lady around Arigidi-Akoko road , Akoko North West in Ondo State.
The lifeless body was discovered by a passers-by, who raised his voice, thereby attracting residents of the community and later became the talk of the town.
The people, particularly the women were wondering who might have done the evil act to the unknown lady.
It was yet to be known if the deceased was an indigene of the community or the lifeless body was only dropped by the ritualists in the community.
Already, remains of deceased have been removed by the Homicide Section of the Nigeria Police for possible identification and investigation.
The Police Public Relations Officer [PPRO], Wole Ogodo confirmed the incident, saying investigation has begun to unravel those behind the killings.
An indigene of Arigidi-Akoko, who spoke with DailyPost but preferred anonymity, said such always occur whenever election period is approaching.
According to him, “My spirit told me this evil work was done by politicians because I have discovered that anytime election is approaching, we always witness things like killing and kidnapping. I am urging the youth, particular the ladies to know the kind of friends they keep.
“Just of recent, a female student of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, a nearby community to our own town was lured by her friend to a house built in a bush. Thank God for the Okada man who took them to the house, but became suspicious when it was only one of them who came out of the house. He quickly put a call across to the Police, but before the Police’s arrival, the other girl had been beheaded by the ritualists. It was later discovered by the Police that the other girl sold her friend to the ritutalists.
“I want to advise our youth, particularly the ladies that they should know the kind of friends they keep. They should not trust anyone, even their best friends and they should stop running after material things. Though, we are yet to know what led to the death of the young lady found by the road side in Aridigi-Akoko, we hope that very soon, the Police will bring the criminals behind this ugly incident to book”.
